God is the Owner of all Things

Pastor Les Walthers
Grace Reformed Baptist Church
Rocky Mount, NC

"Thine, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted as head above all." (I Chronicles 29:11) The simple yet very profound truth that we learn from these words is that God is owner of all things. The heaven of heavens belongs to God. Psa 89:11 "The heavens are Thine, the earth also is Thine; the world and all it contains, Thou hast founded them. The sea belongs to God. Psa 95:5 The sea is His, for it was He who made it; And His hands formed the dry land. Time and every season belong to God. Psa 74:16, 17 Thine is the day, Thine also is the night; Thou hast prepared the light and the sun. Thou hast established all the boundaries of the earth; Thou hast made summer and winter." We have been describing those things in general which belong to God, but what about things in particular. What about those things we call our own? Such things as land, houses and personal possessions? Is there a sense in which God owns these things as well?

First of all, we need to accept the truth that God is the Creator of all. In fact, He created all things for Himself. He did not create anything at the request of someone else. Prov. 16:4 "The LORD has made everything for its own purpose…" God created all things out of nothing, either without any matter, or without any matter but that which He created. God created all things without any help. Not only did God create all things, He sustains and upholds everything. All would fall into oblivion if He did not sustain them. Col 1:16,17 For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities-- all things have been created by Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together." The whole world and all that it contains belongs to God. Heaven is His throne, the earth is His footstool. The world leaders are His servants. Isa 40:15 "Behold, the nations are like a drop from a bucket, and are regarded as a speck of dust on the scales; behold, He lifts up the islands like fine dust." Because God is the creator and sustainer of all things, He is the rightful owner. Because He is the rightful owner of all things, He can dispose of all things as He sees fit. The reality of these truths ought to cause us to acknowledge the greatness of God.

The fact that God is owner of all things means that one day we must give an account to God. How little we think of accountability as we live our life day by day. One day we will give an account of all that God has entrusted to us, our time, our money, our material possessions, our gifts and talents and the health and strength with which He has blessed us. The reality of accountability ought to influence the way we live.
